As a high school or college student, there will come a moment when you will find yourself in a situation where you will need to cite a research paper, dissertation, or an annotated bibliography for a class assignment. There are a variety of formatting styles available, but the most widely used are the MLA, APA, and Chicago styles, which are all included below. In this post, authors from our paper writing service will show you how to appropriately cite a research paper in MLA format using the steps outlined below.
What is MLA Formatting and how does it work?
The Modern Language Association’s formatting style, known as MLA, is utilized in fields such as English studies, comparative literature, foreign language, and literature or cultural studies, among other things. This is an academic style guide that is widely used in the United States, Canada, and several other nations.
The Front Page
So, what is the proper way to format a research paper in MLA format? When writing a research paper in MLA format, there are four essential components to consider.
Page margins, with the exception of the running head, should be exactly 1 inch on all sides of the text as well as on the top and bottom of the page.
Text formatting is the process of arranging text.
The Times New Roman typeface is recommended for use while writing a research paper or other academic assignment since it is easily readable. Set the font size to the regular size, which is usually 12.
Change the line spacing from single to double-spaced to make it more readable. Reading becomes less crowded on the eyes as a result, and the lecturer is able to give necessary comments in a tidy and orderly manner. Please remember to indent the opening line of a paragraph 12 inches from the left margin while writing an essay.
The top-left area of the main page should be used to enter the essential course details. The title page of a research paper written in MLA format should look like this:
- Name in its entirety.
- The name of the teacher or professor.
- The name of the course.
- The assignment is due on the specified date.
After double spacing, type your title below the date and center it on the page, without including a period at the end. It is not recommended that you use bold, italics, or underlined text in your title. Except in the case of a title from another source that is included in your own, there is just one exception to the rule: italics should be used. Make certain that you adhere to the capitalization guidelines. Check the MLA Handbook (pages 67–68) to see if it’s correct.
What is the mechanism by which human memory operates?
Page numbers are provided.
Automatic page numbering can be configured in the top right-hand corner. This is done in order to maintain track of the page order, and it also makes the document more visually appealing. Leave a 12-inch margin at the top of the page that is flush with the right margin.
The Citation in the Body of the Text.
In-text citations are almost usually subordinate, which means that the information is always added at the conclusion of the phrase in parenthesis, rather than at the beginning. The parenthetical reference, on the other hand, should not be included if the relevant information is included in the sentence’s wording.
It is not necessary to provide the author’s name at the conclusion of an in-text citation when the author’s name is within the citation; simply include the page number and you are finished with your referring.
The presence of two sources by the same author may cause confusion for the reader. When they go to the source, they will discover that there are two separate articles. Including a brief title for each study citation will help readers identify which sources they should check for, avoiding any potential misinterpretations.
When a source includes two or three authors, you should mention the last names of all of the authors in your citation. On the other hand, if you have four or more authors, you must list them all in alphabetical order, starting with the last name of the first Author.
When citing a research paper in MLA format, the references should be organized into two sections:
- The quotations that were utilized throughout the essay.
- The Works Cited page is included at the end of the document.
The “in-text citation” refers to the information about the citation that appears within the body of the document itself. The most obvious instance in which it should be used in the text is when you explicitly quote from a source or refer to it by title or author in the text.
To properly cite a source, you must often provide the author’s last name and page number in parentheses immediately following the quote. If the author’s name appears as a feature of your phrase, you simply need to put the page number in the brackets. Otherwise, you can skip this step.
Burke’s name was contained in the phrase, therefore there is no need to repeat it in the citation, as you can see in the example.
The Works Cited page contains a list of references.
Just like harvard referencing style, the usage of references in a research paper written in MLA style means that you must educate the readers about the sources from which you obtained the material. It is referred to as the “Works Cited” page on the reference page. This is the page on which the author acknowledges the original source. Things that should be included in a citation include the author’s last name in alphabetical order, the title of the piece, and the date the work was published.
Follow this format to the letter: Title of Article-> “Author(s),” “Title of Article,” “Title of Journal Volume,” and so on. Pages in the issue (year):
Electronic sources are those that are digital in nature. In-substance references from electronic sources should include the inventor’s name, page number, or area number, as appropriate. This is only applicable if the information does not contain page or section numbers, which can be accomplished in a variety of ways. After you have referenced the recorded material, you would insert the author’s name in the part after you have cited the recorded information.
